Looking back, this was a very interesting project because with almost every project I’ve ever done, I went in with a solid plan. For this project, I had a piece of white oak and wanted it to become a cabinet, I did some rough planning but for the most part, I just made decisions on the spot.
What makes this project really special for me was all the little details I crammed into it. Starting with the outside casework, the parts came from an 8/4 piece of stock that I bookmatched, so when you look at one side and then the other they have the same grain pattern. It’s super subtle and almost no one notices it but I personally love this detail. The door is another great example and not just the bookmatched panel but the door as a whole. The diagonal keys that support the mitre were a random idea that ended up looking amazing and if you look very closely at the edges of the door you can see a very thin walnut trim running the whole way around.
Overall, this project is a perfect example of just letting yourself go with the flow and work with a piece of wood to create some beautiful!
